Piano In The Dark

"Queen of all pieces of furniture you can find at home," is how my mother describes the piano. She had always dreamed of owning one. I thought it was ridiculous since she she was not musically inclined. Her dream finally came true when she bought it twenty years ago. However, my mom never bothered to choose the kind of piano she wanted for the house. I told her she could have chosen from the upright, spinet and console pianos available in the stores that time. She told me it did not matter to her as long as she got one. It became the queen with all the other things in the house as its mere subjects. We were instructed to wipe it , check if there were scratches everyday and cover it every night.

For years I wondered why the kinds of piano made no significance on her until we had a chance to talk about it. She said that a piano will always be a piano no matter what. Different designs, colors and sizes will never change the reason why it was made, to make melodies. The important thing is to make sure its parts work well in order to bring into life the sound of each note harmoniously together.

The hammer strikes the strings which vibrate to produce the sound of notes. Cast iron frame called plate keeps the strings in place. The hitch pin holds one end of the string while the turning pins, more than two hundred in a piano, hold the other ends of the strings and turned to adjust them. Both pins are actually metal screws. The bridge, situated between the strings and the soundboard, sends the vibrations to the soundboard which increases the volume when strings vibrate. Our fingers press the wooden levers we call the keyboard to play music and our feet press on the pedals to sustain or soften the sound. The internal parts are covered and supported by a cabinet which makes it look like a furniture than a musical instrument. The different parts of the piano work as one. If a part is not functioning well it affects the whole system. This made me realize that somehow a piano is like a government.

The President working alone is like a blind man with hands on the steering wheel. Lawmakers need the President for laws to be signed, implemented and the President needs our lawmakers to make laws ensuring order, protecting the citizens and promoting peace. Our judiciary resolves disputes after interpreting and applying the laws. Furthermore, we have the presence of the local government units, our police force and our soldiers, which provides assistance, support and defense. If you think the work stops there, you are wrong. Just like the piano which needs tuning to adjust the tightness of the string and regulation to adjust all the moving parts to give the best sound, we play the most important role in helping the government succeed. We are the pillars that strengthen it. We make up the heart that makes the government feel our hopes and our needs. We are the voices of vigilance, the hands of progress and prosperity. We should work hand in hand to achieve our goals or else we would be just like a piano, left in a dark room, covered with cobwebs and wrapped in dust.
